VicodinThe New York Times has an article intriguingly titled Rise in Pill Abuse Forces New Look at U.S. Drug Fight. The article comes out of their Mexico City bureau. As a result, it is somewhat deceptively title. It is more about the changing face of the Drug War in Mexico. For example, funding has changed to supporting the rule of law. "That amounts to a reversal from 2008 and 2009, when 70 percent was allocated to border security and heavy equipment like helicopters." Helicopters?! And people are surprised that there is a hot war at the boarder?

It does, however, seem that the DEA has its sights on prescription drug "abuse." I wonder how this is going to go. The middle class have discovered the joys of opioids.[1] Pretty much everyone I know likes these pills, even if only a substantial percentage actively seek them out. And when I point out that the Percocet they so love is actually more potent than heroin they so vilify, they don't miss a beat, "Well, I don't inject it!"

If the DEA is serious about this effort, we could see prison populations jumping up to 10%. That would be unsustainable (but expect the private prison industry to lobby hard). If middle class mothers and fathers start being arrested, maybe we'll start examining this evil drug war, as they now are in Mexico.

[1] Actually, they discovered them long ago. Valium has long been referred to as "Vitamin V" (Vicodin is now so referred). And then there is Play It Again, Sam:

Allan: You want a Fresca with a Darvon?
Linda: Unless you have apple juice.
Allan: Apple juice and Darvon is fantastic together!
Linda: Have you ever had Librium and tomato juice?
Allan: No, I haven't personally, but another neurotic tells me they're unbelievable.
