Boy George is best known as the androgenous lead singer of pop new wave band Culture Club. At the peak of his popularity, the English tabloids speculated widely that George was addicted to heroin. He was of course. But just the same, he felt that such knowledge would be damaging to his career. It eventually became public when he was arrested. The same circus-show took place over this as has taken place with Robert Downey, Jr. in this country.
He went through the usual on again, off again struggle of most addicts. But in his case (as with Downey, again) he was watched closely, and it seems the Brits are as tied to zero-tolerance as the Americans. Any time he failed to achieve complete abstinence, it was taken as total failure.
Boy George appears to have been heroin free for the last several years. At least, that's what he says in his autobiography Take it Like a Man. The book is fairly readable, but it whines a bit.
